HOW DOES IT WORK?

Strike a bar with the mallet. Each bar produces a different sound. Explore how the sound changes depending on where you strike the bar. Here we can observe the vibration of a solid body and the creation of a sound wave.

The human ear perceives sound because sound waves traveling through the air cause the eardrum to vibrate. Did you know that the xylophone originated around the 14th century and comes from Southeast Asia? It was originally used as a folk instrument, and it began to appear in orchestras in the 19th century.

HOW DOES IT SUPPORT CHILD DEVELOPMENT?

The xylophone is a simple instrument that resembles a glockenspiel or school bells. Its simple design encourages children to explore music, develop creativity, and express themselves.

Playing musical instruments supports intellectual, emotional, and motor development. Music stimulates the growth and development of all parts of the brain, and playing an instrument is both an enriching activity and a source of great enjoyment.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
► Caregivers or teachers can inspire children and introduce them to the basics of playing the instrument during music lessons. The xylophone is often chosen as a child’s first instrument because of its simplicity.

► The instrument is also perfect for rhythm and movement activities outdoors.

► A fun activity can be guessing well-known melodies or improvising new ones.

Note: The xylophone is an excellent instrument even in locations where other instruments might be too loud (for example, close to residential buildings).
