HOW DOES IT WORK?

Turn the disc with the colorful tubes. What do you hear? Try rotating the disc at different speeds. Tilting the disc causes small elements hidden inside the tubes to move and cascade downward. The sound produced by the tubes imitates the gentle sound of falling raindrops.

The rain stick is a traditional instrument originating from South America. According to legend, the instrument played by a local shaman could persuade the gods to send rain during times of drought.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

► Children can make their own rain stick during craft or music classes. You will need a cardboard tube from a paper towel roll, two balloons, aluminum foil, and a few tablespoons of dry millet groats.

Tear off a long piece of aluminum foil and twist it into a snake-like shape. Place it inside the tube. Then cut the ends off both balloons and attach one of them to one end of the tube to create a membrane that the falling grains will bounce off. Secure it with strong adhesive tape. Pour the millet grains inside the tube and seal the other end using the second balloon.
