HOW DOES IT WORK?

Look at the shadow cast by the steel rod. As long as the sun is not hidden behind clouds, you can read the time it indicates. At noon, the sun’s rays create the shortest shadow line, marking the north direction. Compare the reading with the time on your watch.

Since Copernicus’ time, we have known that the Earth rotates on its own axis, completing one full turn in 24 hours. Differences in time readings on other clocks result from the fact that a sundial follows true local solar time, which varies by location. Local time depends on geographical longitude. For practical reasons, we use standard time zones. In Europe, a single time zone stretches from Lisbon to Poland’s eastern border, where Central European Time (CET) is observed. This corresponds precisely to the local astronomical time at longitude 15° E.
